West Coast Moto Jam
May 16, 2010
Sonoma, Ca – Dustin Hoffman and his Precepts Motorsports backed CHM Honda competed in the first every cross over challenge
at the West Coast Moto Jam in Sonoma California. The event consisted of 3 separate motorcycle disciplines, flat track, motocross,
and supermoto. The points from the finish in each discipline would be combined for a single cross over champion.
The first day of competition was to be held on the Eddy Mulder short track. It would be Dustin’s first time to ever strap on a steal
shoe and run laps around a short track. The heat races would dwindle down the field of over 30 riders into and A and B main
consisting of 12 riders each. Dustin was able to qualify directly into the A main with a 3rd place finish in his heat race. Dustin ran
most of the main event in 8th place before a late race fall that caused a red flag. The restart was a sprint to the finish and Dustin
crossed the finish line in 11th place. 11th out of 30 plus riders isn’t bad for never racing flat track.
Day two was the motocross event. This was a little more in line with Dustin’s experience. The race was one 8 lap main with all 30
plus competitors on the line. Dustin came out of the gate good and rounded the first turn in 5th place. He was quickly able to make
a few passes and settled into third, just behind the leaders. He was sitting back waiting for the right moment to make his charge to
the lead, all the while dealing with dirt in his goggles from the start. Unfortunately Dustin got some arm pump late in the race
while pressuring for the lead and was forced to settle for 3rd place. The podium finish helped his point standings going into the last
day of competition.
Supermoto was to be the final event of the cross over challenge. Due to the failure of the timing and scoring system the grid for
the main event was based on point not timed qualifying as advertised. The start to the main event was a disaster and
unfortunately Dustin got the short end of the stick. Some of the competitors on the front row jumped the start and it seemed as if
the officials would reset the grid, just as Dustin eased up on the throttle the green flag dropped and Hoffman came out of the first
turn somewhere around 20th place. With a daunting task ahead of him Dustin put on a charge that would take him from the back
of the pack to 5th place. Dustin rode an aggressive race and was able to salvage some points toward the overall tally.
With all the points added up Dustin was awarded 6th place.
Dustin also competed in the Supermoto USA Open pro class on Sunday. Just using the race for a practice session and running some
pretty ragged tires Dustin was able to overcome a 14th place starting position and take the overall win at the events premier class.
Dustin had this to say about his weekend, “Overall I liked the format but they definitely have a lot to work on as far running the
event. A lot of rules were changed the day of competition and they let a lot of shady stuff go on with the starts. I’m a little
disappointed in my performance in the supermoto race, I felt like I had the speed to win but after that start I had no chance. I really
have to thank my brother for all the work he puts in. He was up at 6 each morning and worked on the bike late each night so
everything was clean and ready for the next day. I also would really like to thank ASV for getting us everything we needed for the
weekend. They really went out of their way to take care of me and the ASV folding lever probably saved me a clutch lever in flat
track. I also want to say thanks to Trinity Graphics for making the bikes look great. Thanks to everyone for all their help.”
Dustin would also like to thank all those around him that chip in and make his racing possible. Including,
